POLL: Firefox Smacks Down Google Chrome in Reader Vote

In our inaugural week of the Web Faceoff, we pitted Mozilla Firefox against upstart Google Chrome. We threw these two web browser titans into the ring and had you cast the deciding vote over who deserved glory and fame. Now, after a staggering 8,800 votes, we finally have a victor.

Here is your winner:

Yes, Firefox (Firefox) has taken the gold and left its newer competitor on the tarmac! It wasn’t an easy win, though. Firefox garnered 52% of the vote – 4600 of them to be exact – while Chrome (Chrome) snatched up 3310 votes for 38%. 10% of you (911 votes) just couldn’t decide between the two and voted that the fight was a tie.

Well done Google Chrome, you got a lot of votes!
While Firefox is a mature browser with support for many great plugins, is Chrome just a beginner WITHOUT any plugin!
I think even if people compare just the browser most of them vote for Firefox because they used the Mozilla browser for years. Next the chrome browser works on windows only (yeah I have one on Ubuntu but this one is not from Google).

Anyway, strange browser comparison...

Gmail - Firefox Add-on; Gmail Manager stopped working recently - Gmail Help

An add-on I use in firefox, amongst loads of other users; Gmail Manager - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1320

It has recently stopped working,

if you're using the firefox addon "Gmail manager", you might have noticed that authentication is not working as normal. The inbox check has stopped working too.

PHPBuilder.com: On The Go Coding with PHPanywhere

In this recent post to PHPBuilder.com they spotlight a web-based tool you can use to write PHP code no matter where in the world you are - PHPanywhere.

PHP developers, just like most IT professionals, are often on the go, working from various locations. You could be working in your office one day, at a conference in a remote location the next day, and from a client's business office the next. [...] PHPanywhere is not just a stand-alone IDE, it's designed with project collaboration in mind. With a built-in FTP client and syntax editor built right in, it makes this tool uniquely appropriate for developer teams as well as individual programmers.

They look at how to get started with the tool and include a few screenshots to give you a preview of how the tool looks and feels. A short feature list is also included.

Just tried it and removed my account after a few minutes:

  • I need to add a ftp server to add / edit files. That is okay but my ftp login/password is send via a non-secured connection (no SSL)
  • First trial to edit files was in Firefox (Ubuntu) and all windows needed to be resized and the code wasn't parsed in the window. Can't use Firefox 3.5 with phpanywhere
  • Next trial in Chrome was much better, but hitting the enter button took me into another location than the next line.

Sorry this is not a beta version, I like the idea but there has to be working version and of course the ability to edit files on some "local" server

Rating 2/5 for the nice interface
